Workshops
Atemporal

A unique experience that brings together dance, live Chopi music, education and intercultural dialogue.

Choreographer Yentl de Werdt enters into a dialogue with master musician Matchume Zango. This collaboration results in a unique synergy between contemporary dance and traditional Chopi music.

Chopi music, originating from Mozambique, is more than just music; it is a living heritage. The complex rhythms, chants and instrumentation create a unique soundscape that has been passed down through generations. Atemporal is not only an ode to Chopi music; it is also an intercultural dialogue.

Education and intercultural dialogue:

In addition to the performance, we offer fascinating workshops. These workshops introduce children and young people to the richness of Chopi music and contemporary dance. Matchume Zango (MOZ) has been dedicated to traditional Mozambican music and dance since he was six years old. He is considered one of the new masters of Timbila. His parents and grandparents come from Zavala, Inhambane province, the center of the Timbila tradition in Mozambique. Inspired by this long and passionate history of music and percussion, he started playing, studying music and making instruments such as xitende, African drums, etc. Over the past twenty years, Matchume has traveled the world as a musician and composer of traditional, experimental and fusion music.

Choreographer Yentl de Werdt (BE) studied at the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp and is the only Limburger who graduated in 2006 from PARTS, the internationally renowned dance training of Anne-Teresa De Keersmaeker in Brussels. Since 2007 she has been active in the Brussels, Flemish and international dance field. For a number of performances she worked with choreographers and dancers, including Benjamin Vandewalle, fABULEUS/Randi De Vlieghe and Akram Khan. In 2016, after a career in Brussels and the international dance field, she consciously returned to her roots in Limburg. Since 2016 she has been developing her own connecting dance projects under the auspices of the AYU.
